Retailers scramble as beverage container return scheme deadline looms

Major retailers have intensified efforts to clear shelves of products that do not meet new labelling requirements for an impending beverage container return scheme, with the transition period set to expire imminently. The regulatory shift requires beverage containers to carry specific markings indicating compliance with the scheme's standards, but a significant volume of existing stock remains non-compliant.

Retailers were given a six-month grace period to prepare for the transition, and many have employed aggressive pricing strategies to accelerate sales of non-compliant products. Despite these efforts, including steep discounts that some retailers describe as substantial, clearing the backlog has proven more challenging than anticipated in several markets across South and Southeast Asia.

Industry sources suggest the difficulty stems from the sheer volume of affected inventory combined with consumer purchasing patterns and logistics constraints. Some retailers have indicated they may need to remove products entirely from shelves rather than sell through remaining stock before the deadline takes effect.

The scheme aims to standardise beverage container labelling across participating jurisdictions and improve recycling compliance. Retailers and distributors who fail to comply with the new requirements beyond the transition period may face regulatory penalties.
