The tragic accident took place when the vehicle was travelling approximately 500 metres downhill from the Barliar checkpoint in Coimbatore district's Ooty Road section. A boulder that had become loose from the adjacent hillside suddenly fell directly onto the moving car, causing fatal injuries to the retired Air Force officer inside.
The impact of the falling rock proved immediately catastrophic, and the officer was pronounced dead at the scene. Local authorities and emergency responders were alerted to the incident, which has raised concerns about the stability of hillside terrain along this stretch of the frequently used mountain road.
The Ooty Road, which connects several towns in the Nilgiri region, is known for its challenging terrain and weather conditions. The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by commuters and travellers on hill roads in Tamil Nadu, where rockfalls during monsoon seasons and periods of soil erosion pose significant hazards to vehicular traffic.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the boulder's dislodgement are underway. Authorities have indicated that geological assessments of the affected hillside section may be necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.
