Retired Boeing 737 becomes thriving artificial reef off Canadian coast

A retired Boeing 737 aircraft has been submerged off the coast of Chemainus, British Columbia, creating an unexpected haven for marine biodiversity. The aircraft, originally operated by Canadian Airlines, was carefully prepared before being lowered onto the seabed in 2006, marking an innovative approach to environmental conservation.

Prior to its descent, dedicated volunteers undertook extensive cleaning operations to ensure the aircraft would not pose environmental risks to the surrounding waters. The meticulous preparation reflected a commitment to making the project both ecologically sound and beneficial to local marine habitats.

Since its placement on the ocean floor, the aircraft—now officially designated as Xihwu Reef—has evolved into a flourishing underwater ecosystem. Marine scientists have documented over 100 different species now inhabiting and utilizing the structure, ranging from fish to invertebrates that have colonized various sections of the fuselage and wings.
