BANDAR PERMAISURI, Oct 9 — A retired officer from the Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) lost his life in a fatal traffic accident in the Setiu area of Terengganu on Tuesday. The victim was driving a Proton Wira when the vehicle veered across the centre line into the opposing lane, resulting in a high-impact collision with an oncoming Proton Persona.
The incident occurred in the morning hours at Bandar Permaisuri. Emergency services arrived at the scene to find the retired JKR employee trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, while the occupants of the Persona sustained injuries and were transported to the nearest medical facility for treatment.
The exact cause of the Wira's lane departure remains under investigation by local traffic police. Authorities did not immediately confirm whether mechanical failure, driver error, or other factors contributed to the accident. The road was temporarily closed to allow rescue operations and collision scene examination to be completed.
The incident adds to Terengganu's traffic fatality toll and underscores ongoing road safety concerns on the state's main routes. Police have urged motorists to exercise caution and maintain safe following distances during travel.
