Retired Judge Malalgoda appointed new HRCSL Chairman

Retired Judge V.K. Malalgoda has been appointed Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) under new leadership announced by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The appointment comes as the government reshapes the composition of the statutory body responsible for investigating human rights violations and promoting fundamental freedoms.

Joining Malalgoda on the reconstituted Commission are S.Y.M. Gomes, A.L.A. Azeez, Dr S.S.S.B.D.H. Jayawardena and Professor T. Jayasingam, all of whom were appointed as commissioners. The Secretary to the President formally presented letters of appointment to the new office holders.

The HRCSL serves as an independent institution tasked with investigating complaints of human rights violations, promoting human rights awareness, and advising the government on matters pertaining to civil liberties and fundamental freedoms. The appointment of the new leadership team represents the latest governance restructuring undertaken by the Dissanayake administration since coming to office.
