The retiree was contacted by individuals posing as bank officials and police personnel, who convinced him that his accounts had been compromised and funds were at risk. The scammers instructed him to transfer his savings to multiple accounts under the guise of securing his assets, a common tactic used in such schemes.
Following their instructions, the victim made several transfers totalling RM1.417 million before realizing the fraudulent nature of the calls. By the time he discovered the deception, the funds had already been moved through various accounts, making recovery efforts significantly more difficult.
The case highlights the vulnerability of retirees to sophisticated phone-based fraud schemes, particularly when perpetrators impersonate trusted authorities such as banking officials and law enforcement. Such scams have become increasingly prevalent across the region, with criminals exploiting psychological tactics to create urgency and bypass victims' natural caution.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and never transfer funds based on unsolicited calls, regardless of the caller's claims of authority. Victims are advised to contact their banks directly and report incidents to local police.
