Review Attorney-General appointment process, urges Bangi MP

Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has urged the government to review the appointment process for the Attorney-General, arguing that existing laws should be amended to minimise political considerations in the selection.

Syahredzan's comments follow the controversy surrounding the appointment of a new Tabung Haji chief executive, which has drawn scrutiny over how such high-level positions are filled. The lawmaker contends that the current framework leaves room for political influence that could compromise the integrity of critical institutional appointments.

The MP highlighted the need for safeguards to ensure that merit and qualification take precedence over political affiliation or considerations when selecting individuals for senior government posts. His remarks underscore broader concerns within parliament about transparency and independence in Malaysia's appointment procedures for key leadership roles.

Amendments to the relevant legislation could establish clearer criteria and more robust oversight mechanisms for vetting candidates for the Attorney-General position and other senior posts, he suggested.
