Revolving credit card balances—the portion of outstanding debt that cardholders carry forward each month—are showing signs of moderation across India's credit card industry, driven by improved repayment discipline and digital financial management tools.
Axis Bank attributes the slowdown in revolving balances to two key factors: increased awareness among consumers about the costs of carrying forward debt and the effectiveness of digital reminders in prompting timely repayments. These tools have helped cardholders better manage their credit obligations and reduce the temptation to maintain persistent balances.
Despite the moderation in revolving balances, the credit card sector continues to show robust growth momentum in other areas. Card spending remains strong as consumers maintain healthy transaction volumes, while the conversion of purchases into equated monthly instalments (EMIs) continues to support overall growth in the segment.
The trend reflects a maturing credit card market where consumers are becoming more financially savvy about borrowing costs. As digital payment adoption deepens across Indian households, banks are leveraging technology to encourage responsible credit behaviour while maintaining attractive products that drive card usage and spending volumes.
