Reynolds, Lively donation funds Indigenous water management training in Canada

The donation to Water First, a non-profit organisation, has strengthened capacity-building efforts within Indigenous communities by establishing a comprehensive training pathway for water operators. The initiative addresses critical infrastructure gaps in remote and underserved Indigenous territories where water quality and management remain persistent challenges.

Eight Indigenous trainees successfully completed the 15-month certification process, accumulating more than 2,000 hours of combined practical and technical training. The rigorous programme equipped participants with skills in water treatment, system operation, and regulatory compliance—competencies essential for managing water infrastructure at the community level.

The graduates are now entering careers in water treatment and distribution, representing a significant step toward Indigenous self-sufficiency in essential services. By developing local expertise, the initiative reduces dependency on external contractors and builds sustainable institutional knowledge within participating communities.

Water management remains a critical concern across many Indigenous territories in Canada, where infrastructure challenges have historically compromised water quality and access. The training programme exemplifies how targeted investment in human capital can address systemic service delivery gaps while supporting economic opportunities within Indigenous regions.
