The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has summoned the Officer-in-Charge of Homagama Police Station along with two other officers to investigate the death of a 29-year-old father of two who died in police custody. According to Commission Attorney-at-Law Nimal G. Punchihewa, the officers were required to appear before the commission on 29 January to provide information about the case.

The summoning follows reports that the man died inside a police cell, prompting the commission to open an inquiry into the circumstances of his death. The commission's intervention signals growing scrutiny into the incident and potential concerns regarding how the detainee was treated while in custody.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has established jurisdiction to investigate allegations of human rights violations, including deaths occurring during police detention. The summons represents a formal step in establishing the facts surrounding the custody death and determining accountability where warranted.

The investigation comes as concerns about police custody procedures and detainee welfare remain a matter of public interest in Sri Lanka. The commission's examination of the case will seek to clarify the sequence of events leading to the death and assess compliance with protocols for the safeguarding of individuals held in police facilities.
