The All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) has issued a strong rebuke against restrictions placed on protest activities at Jantar Mantar, one of India's most iconic sites for public demonstrations and civil discourse.
The organization argued that the newly enforced limitations contradict fundamental rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution, particularly the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. AIDSO stated that such curbs effectively prevent citizens from exercising their democratic prerogatives and engaging in legitimate forms of dissent.
Jantar Mantar, situated in central New Delhi, has historically served as a focal point for various social, political, and environmental movements. The plaza has witnessed numerous significant protests ranging from farmers' agitations to student activism and anti-corruption campaigns over several decades.
The group called for an immediate review of the restrictions, emphasizing that democratic societies require robust spaces for public protest and dialogue. AIDSO urged authorities to reconsider the measures and ensure that citizens retain unhindered access to designated protest venues.
The restrictions come amid ongoing debates regarding the balance between maintaining public order and safeguarding constitutional freedoms in India's democratic framework.
