Rising commodity costs push Indian thali prices higher: CRISIL

The cost of a vegetarian thali has climbed to ₹30.8 in September from ₹28.1 a year earlier, reflecting the impact of elevated food and energy prices on household meal expenses across India. Non-vegetarian thalis have similarly risen, increasing to ₹59.5 from ₹56 during the same period, according to analysis by CRISIL, a leading credit rating agency.

The price increases are primarily driven by surging costs of essential cooking ingredients and fuels. Onions, a fundamental component in Indian cuisine, have seen volatile price movements over the past year. Cooking oils and LPG, both critical to meal preparation, have also contributed to the overall rise in thali costs.

The CRISIL report highlights how inflation in specific commodity categories is translating into higher food costs for ordinary Indian households. The thali index, which tracks the price of basic meals, serves as a barometer of inflationary pressure on everyday consumer expenses.

These findings underscore the ongoing affordability challenges faced by Indian families as they contend with elevated prices for both food ingredients and cooking fuels. The sustained increases suggest continued pressure on household budgets across the country.
