RJD, JDS seek disqualification of independent MLCs backing BJP

The Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal (Socialist) have intensified their push for the disqualification of two independent MLAs at the centre of a political row over their alleged switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The controversy began when the Bihar BJP issued a press statement announcing that both legislators had joined the party, signalling a potential shift in the state assembly's political balance. The announcement prompted immediate backlash from opposition benches.

However, when the controversy escalated, both independent MLAs issued clarifications stating they had not formally joined the BJP, claiming instead that they were merely extending support to the ruling party on select legislative matters. The conflicting accounts have fuelled allegations of political manoeuvring in Bihar's fractious assembly.

Opposition parties have seized on the incident to demand action against the MLAs, arguing that their statements demonstrate a breach of electoral rules and constitutional provisions governing the conduct of legislators. The matter has added to existing tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties in the state.
