RM1,000 driver assistance scheme nationwide, not Melaka-focused: Loke

Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook has stressed that the RM1,000 financial assistance for drivers is a nationwide initiative and not targeted specifically at Melaka, dismissing claims that the scheme is tied to electoral considerations.

The minister's clarification comes as the special aid programme for commercial vehicle operators and professional drivers gains attention across Malaysia. Loke emphasised that the assistance forms part of the government's broader effort to support the transportation sector amid ongoing economic pressures.

The RM1,000 aid is intended to help drivers cope with rising operational costs and fuel expenses, the transport ministry indicated. The scheme has been structured to ensure equitable distribution across all states where eligible drivers can apply for the financial support.

Loke's statement addresses speculation that the timing and rollout of the assistance scheme may be connected to political considerations in Melaka, where state elections are anticipated. The minister maintained that decisions regarding driver support programmes are guided by policy objectives rather than electoral calendars.

The transport ministry said it continues to monitor the impact of the assistance scheme and remains committed to supporting Malaysia's transportation workforce.
