RM15,000 hajj deposit won't turn Tabung Haji into bank: minister
Malaysia's minister has clarified that requiring pilgrims to maintain a minimum deposit will not transform Tabung Haji into a commercial banking institution. The organisation will continue to operate strictly within its statutory mandate, he said.

Tabung Haji will not deviate from its core responsibilities despite implementing a RM15,000 deposit requirement for pilgrims, according to Minister Zulkifli Hasan. The deposit policy does not represent a shift in the organisation's fundamental purpose or operating model, he stressed. Tabung Haji operates under specific legislation that defines its role and obligations, and the deposit measure aligns with these statutory requirements rather than transforming it into a conventional bank. The minister's remarks address concerns raised about the policy's implications for the pilgrim savings scheme. Tabung Haji continues to serve its primary function of facilitating hajj savings and religious obligations for Malaysian Muslims, officials maintained.
