RM22m Sungai Golok dredging project completed ahead of monsoon season

KOTA BHARU — Authorities have completed a RM22 million dredging project on the Sungai Golok estuary, marking a significant step in Kelantan's efforts to manage flood risks as the northeast monsoon approaches.

The dredging operation, which concluded on September 6, is intended to enhance water flow through the estuary and reduce flooding in surrounding areas during the high-risk monsoon period that typically runs from November to March.

The Sungai Golok estuary, which borders Thailand, has long been a critical area for flood management in the state. Silt and sediment accumulation in the channel has previously contributed to water backup and increased inundation during heavy rainfall.

The completion of the project comes as regional authorities continue to implement infrastructure improvements aimed at protecting Kelantan's communities from seasonal flooding. Officials have indicated that the dredging work complements existing flood mitigation strategies across the state.

Residents and local administrators will monitor the effectiveness of the project during the approaching monsoon season, with authorities standing ready to deploy additional resources if needed.
