Road transport authority timekeeper held over bribery allegations

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) apprehended Deepal Perera, who works as a timekeeper for the authority, during an operation at the bus stand on Wednesday. Authorities conducted the arrest inside the timekeeper's booth at the busy transport hub.

The case marks the latest in a series of corruption investigations targeting officials within the public transport sector. Timekeepers play a coordinating role in Sri Lanka's bus transport system, managing schedules and operations at major transit points.

The CIABOC has intensified its focus on petty corruption within state institutions, particularly in departments that interface regularly with the public. Transport authority personnel have been a recurring subject of anti-corruption inquiries in recent years.

Further details regarding the circumstances of the alleged bribe and the investigation's progress were not immediately disclosed. The suspect is expected to be produced before the relevant authorities for formal processing of charges.
