Rockfall closes key Vijayawada road after heavy rain

Heavy rainfall in Vijayawada has triggered a rockfall on Indrakeeladri Ghat Road, forcing authorities to clear debris and assess structural integrity along the critical thoroughfare. The incident occurred as the region experienced two consecutive days of precipitation, which destabilized rock formations on the adjacent hillside.

The road had been closed for three days prior to the rockfall for ongoing repair work. District Collector G. Lakshmisha has directed officials to remove the fallen boulders and debris on an expedited basis to restore traffic flow and ensure public safety.

Following the incident, authorities have initiated a detailed survey of the hillside to identify other loose rocks or unstable formations that could pose similar risks. The inspection aims to prevent further rockfalls and implement necessary stabilization measures before reopening the route to commuters.
