MANILA — Former Speaker Martin Romualdez's legal representatives moved to challenge plunder accusations filed by the Office of the Ombudsman on Thursday, submitting a supplemental affidavit in hopes of securing a dismissal of the charges. Attorney Felix Villa, representing Romualdez, presented the document to the antigraft body as part of ongoing efforts to counter the complaint related to a flood control scheme.
The supplemental filing includes a statement from Orly Guteza, whose account appears central to Romualdez's defense strategy. The submission represents another legal maneuver in the former legislator's push to clear his name in the case that emerged from alleged irregularities in the flood mitigation project.
Romualdez, a prominent political figure and former member of Congress, has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. The case centers on allegations that public funds were misappropriated or improperly used in connection with the flood control initiative.
