Romualdez yet to file bail petition in P7.4-billion plunder case

MANILA — Former House Speaker and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez remains without a filed bail petition more than a week after his September 16 arraignment on plunder charges, according to the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
The anti-graft court division revealed Thursday that no bail application has been submitted by Romualdez in the case involving alleged kickbacks totaling P7.4 billion. Dennis Pulma, the division's clerk of court, indicated the status could change as proceedings continue.
The charges stem from allegations that Romualdez improperly received substantial kickbacks through his position, though the exact nature of the disputed transactions remains under court scrutiny. The delay in filing a bail petition may suggest Romualdez's legal team is still evaluating strategy options or preparing supporting documentation.
The case marks one of the most significant graft prosecutions of a high-ranking Philippine official in recent years. Romualdez, who previously led the House of Representatives, now faces the judicial process from his position as Leyte's congressional representative.
