Ronaldinho, one of soccer's most globally recognized figures, has signed with Ravenna, a modest Italian third-tier club based in a city better known for its beaches than its sporting prowess. The surprise move marks a remarkable return to professional football for the 46-year-old Brazilian, who had stepped away from the sport over a decade ago.
The announcement was formalized in June, but Ronaldinho's official presentation took place Thursday, dubbed "Ronaldinho day" by the club. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star was introduced to the media before a glitzy beachside ceremony that drew approximately 6,000 fans, many waving flags and holding flares despite intermittent rain. The occasion featured the song "Hall of Fame" by The Script, played as the football legend walked out to greet supporters as the club's new number 10.
While expressing his enthusiasm for joining the club, Ronaldinho struck a cautious note about expectations. "I'm very happy to be here with my friends, but let's wait and see if things go well with the team," he said at the presentation, according to reports.
