The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has initiated testing procedures for power generation at its first operational unit, representing a major step forward in Bangladesh's nuclear energy programme. The facility, located in Pabna district approximately 140 kilometres northwest of Dhaka, has reached this stage following successful completion of earlier construction and commissioning phases.

The commencement of power generation testing represents the transition from the construction and assembly phase to operational validation. During this testing period, plant operators will systematically evaluate the reactor's performance, safety systems, and power output capabilities under controlled conditions before the unit is cleared for full commercial operation.

The Rooppur project, developed in partnership with Russia's Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, comprises two 1,200-megawatt pressurised water reactors. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to contribute significantly to Bangladesh's electricity generation capacity and support the nation's growing energy demands.

The project has been progressed through multiple developmental stages over recent years, with international oversight ensuring adherence to nuclear safety and security standards. Completion of power generation testing at Unit 1 will pave the way for similar procedures at Unit 2 and eventual integration of the facility into Bangladesh's national power grid.
