The investment forms part of ongoing efforts to improve transport connectivity along the key north-south corridor linking the central highlands with the Jaffna Peninsula. The upgrade project targets a critical section of the A9 highway that experiences significant vehicular traffic and serves as a vital commercial and commuter route.
The three-kilometre stretch in Vavuniya has been identified as requiring comprehensive rehabilitation to address deteriorating road conditions and enhance safety standards. The contract scope typically encompasses resurfacing, widening, and drainage improvements to bring the roadway to modern specifications.
Improvement of the Kandy-Jaffna route has remained a priority for infrastructure development across the Northern and Central provinces. Enhanced road conditions are expected to reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and facilitate economic activity in regions dependent on this corridor for trade and passenger movement.
The project timeline and contractor details remain subject to standard procurement protocols. Completion of the upgrade is anticipated to bolster regional connectivity and contribute to broader efforts to rehabilitate national highways across the island.
