Rubio touched down at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 2.15 pm, beginning his October 20-22 visit at a time of renewed focus on the India-US relationship. The State Department official is expected to hold key discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, with talks centring on advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across multiple domains.
The visit will prioritise economic engagement, with Rubio accompanied by a substantial business delegation to explore opportunities in energy, trade and investment sectors. Officials are also expected to exchange perspectives on developments in West Asia, reflecting shared concerns over regional stability and security challenges.
Rubio's return to India, following his May trip during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended a Quad foreign ministers' meeting, underscores the Biden administration's commitment to the strategic partnership. Despite persistent tensions in bilateral relations, both sides appear focused on identifying areas of convergence and strengthening collaborative frameworks in critical technologies and defence cooperation.
The visit is scheduled to span three days, with engagements expected across government and business sectors in a bid to deepen people-to-people and institutional ties between the two nations.
