Rubio meets India's business titans before Reliance refinery tour

Marco Rubio met with Gautam Adani, chairman of Adani Group, and N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, during his maiden India visit as the US State Department's top diplomat. The back-to-back meetings took place in Mumbai on Wednesday morning, with neither party disclosing substantive details of the discussions.

Following the business meetings, Rubio travelled to Jamnagar in Gujarat to tour Reliance Industries' mega-facility, which houses the world's largest single-site oil refinery. The visit was also intended to showcase Reliance's Vantara subsidiary and its giga factories—capital-intensive manufacturing platforms for next-generation technologies.

The high-profile engagements underscore deepening ties between Washington and India's private sector during a period of strategic alignment. Both the Adani Group and Tata Sons operate in sectors critical to New Delhi's economic agenda, including renewable energy, manufacturing, infrastructure and logistics—areas seen as key to building resilient regional supply chains and attracting multinational investment away from China.

Rubio's arrival in Mumbai on Tuesday marked the beginning of a significant diplomatic mission aimed at strengthening US-India economic and strategic partnerships. The visit reflects broader American interest in engaging with India's leading industrial houses as both nations seek to reshape global trade networks and technology collaboration.
