Rupee strengthens to six-month peak as oil prices ease

The rupee's appreciation gained momentum on Friday as it climbed 0.60 per cent to finish at 93.91 per dollar, representing its most favourable exchange rate since April 22. The currency's strength reflected two key market drivers: softening crude oil prices that ease pressure on India's import bill, and sustained foreign investment flows into Indian equity markets.

Lower oil prices carry particular significance for India's macroeconomic health, as the country imports nearly 80 per cent of its petroleum requirements. A decline in global crude costs reduces inflationary pressures and eases the strain on the nation's current account deficit, factors that typically support rupee appreciation.

Foreign investors have maintained their appetite for Indian equities despite global market volatility, with consistent inflows providing additional support to the rupee. Market analysts attribute the currency's six-month high to the combined effect of improved fiscal fundamentals and positive investor sentiment towards Indian markets.

The rupee's strengthening comes amid broader efforts to monitor currency stability and capital flows. Policymakers continue to track external sector dynamics as domestic economic growth remains relatively resilient compared to other emerging markets in the region.
