Rural job scheme expands permitted work categories by 41 percent

The government on Tuesday notified 375 permissible work categories under the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), marking a substantial 41 percent increase from the 266 works permitted under the previous iteration of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The expanded list signals a significant evolution in how rural employment guarantee schemes have adapted since their inception. Where earlier iterations primarily focused on basic infrastructure such as pond construction and road maintenance, the updated framework now encompasses a broader spectrum of development activities suited to contemporary rural needs.
This diversification aligns with the government's stated objective of creating more varied employment opportunities in rural areas while simultaneously addressing multiple development objectives. The revised work categories reflect changing priorities in agricultural development, renewable energy adoption, and infrastructure modernization in India's villages.
The expansion of permissible works under the scheme provides state administrations with greater flexibility in designing employment-guarantee projects tailored to local conditions and requirements. Officials expect the broader menu of options will enable more efficient deployment of rural labor while contributing to diverse development outcomes across different regions.
