Russia claims destruction of hundreds of Ukrainian drones amid election
Moscow authorities reported intercepting over 350 unmanned aerial vehicles targeting the Russian capital region as voting began in national elections. The reported drone incursions occurred over a nine-hour period spanning late September 17 and early September 18.

Russian defence officials claimed to have destroyed dozens of Ukrainian drones attacking the Moscow region as polling stations opened for scheduled elections. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that more than 350 unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the region between 8:00 pm on September 17 and 7:00 am the following morning.
The reported drone assault coincided with the opening of voting stations across Russia for what officials described as important electoral proceedings. Moscow's air defence systems were reported to be actively engaged throughout the overnight period.
The claims by Russian authorities could not be independently verified. Ukraine has not commented on the reported drone operations. Cross-border drone incidents have become increasingly common along the Russia-Ukraine front, with both sides regularly reporting aerial incursions and interceptions.
The timing of the reported attack during an election period underscores ongoing tensions between the two nations, which have maintained military operations for an extended period. Russian officials frequently announce drone interceptions, citing air defence capabilities in major population centres.
