Russia continues energy strikes despite Trump ceasefire talks

Ukrainian officials said Russian forces launched fresh airstrikes targeting critical energy facilities across the country, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread damage to power infrastructure. President Zelensky reported that at least six energy targets were hit in the coordinated assault, underscoring the continued intensity of military operations despite international diplomatic efforts.

The strikes represent Russia's sustained campaign against Ukraine's energy sector, a strategy that has intensified over recent months as Moscow seeks to degrade the country's ability to sustain its defence and civilian operations during winter. Energy infrastructure has emerged as a priority target, with previous Russian attacks causing widespread blackouts and heating shortages across Ukrainian population centres.

The latest attacks occurred amid growing international discussions regarding potential peace negotiations. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated his administration would pursue ceasefire negotiations, signalling a potential shift in the geopolitical approach to the conflict that has persisted since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Kyiv has consistently rejected any ceasefire proposals that would result in territorial concessions, emphasising that any settlement must address Russian aggression and respect Ukrainian sovereignty. Military analysts note that continued Russian strikes on infrastructure suggest Moscow is attempting to maximise battlefield and economic advantages ahead of any potential negotiations.
