Russia intensifies strikes across Ukraine as civilian toll surges sharply

Russian forces have launched strikes across nine Ukrainian regions, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity and causing civilian injuries across the war-torn nation. The coordinated attacks have compounded the humanitarian crisis facing Ukraine as winter approaches, with critical infrastructure bearing the brunt of the bombardment.

New casualty figures paint a grimmer picture of the conflict's toll on civilians. According to recent reports, civilian casualties in September increased by 85 percent compared to the same month last year, underscoring the intensifying nature of the conflict. Ukrainian authorities have characterised the surge as evidence of Russia's strategy to target civilian populations and critical infrastructure.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised alarm over the trajectory of international support for Ukraine, expressing concern during a summit in Brussels that backing from the United States may be diminishing. The warning reflects Kyiv's anxiety about sustaining its defence as military requirements remain substantial and resources increasingly strained.

In response to the escalating situation, Ukraine has intensified calls for expanded military assistance from Western nations. The European Union has signalled its intent to enhance support for Ukraine, though the pace and scale of aid commitments remain subjects of ongoing diplomatic negotiations. Officials in Kyiv emphasise that additional weaponry and defence systems are critical to countering Russian operations and protecting civilian populations.
