Russia offers India advanced engines for Sukhoi-30MKI fighter fleet

Russia has extended a proposal to modernize India's Sukhoi-30MKI fighter fleet by retrofitting advanced AL-177S engines, according to discussions between the nations. The upgraded powerplants would generate 14.5 tonnes of thrust, representing a significant enhancement over the aircraft's current propulsion system.

A key advantage of the Russian proposal lies in the AL-177S engines' dimensional and weight compatibility with the existing AL-31F/FP powerplants currently installed across the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30MKI inventory. This compatibility would minimize structural modifications required during installation, reducing implementation timelines and costs.

The offer comes as India continues evaluating options to enhance the capabilities of its frontline fighter squadrons. The Sukhoi-30MKI, developed jointly by Russia and India, remains one of the air force's most potent combat platforms. Engine modernization represents a cost-effective approach to extending the fleet's operational lifespan while improving thrust-to-weight ratios and overall performance metrics.
