Russia seizes Japanese tobacco firm assets amid diplomatic tensions

Russian authorities have seized control of Japan Tobacco International's business units operating within the country, according to reports from Moscow. The move represents a significant hardening of economic relations between Russia and Japan, already strained by international sanctions and geopolitical disputes.

The takeover of JTI's Russian operations comes as Moscow continues to nationalise or redistribute assets belonging to foreign corporations following Western sanctions imposed over Russia's military actions. Japanese companies have faced increasing pressure in the Russian market as diplomatic relations between Tokyo and Moscow have deteriorated.

Japan Tobacco International, one of the world's largest tobacco manufacturers, had maintained substantial operations in Russia prior to the seizure. The company has not yet issued a formal response to the confiscation of its assets.

The seizure underscores the deepening economic decoupling between Russia and Japan. Tokyo has aligned itself with Western nations in imposing sanctions on Moscow, prompting retaliatory measures and the targeting of Japanese business interests operating within Russian territory.

The incident reflects broader trends of Russia moving to control foreign-owned businesses as it faces international isolation. Japanese firms operating in Russia face an increasingly uncertain operating environment amid the deteriorating bilateral relationship.
