Russia threatens to strip contract soldiers of bonuses for domestic law breaches

Russia's defence ministry has signalled its intention to use financial penalties as a deterrent against contract soldiers committing crimes on the domestic front, particularly as incidents of violence among returning military personnel have grown increasingly concerning.

Under the proposed framework, contract soldiers who are convicted of violations—including domestic violence offences—would lose eligibility for lump-sum payments typically awarded to service members. The defence ministry has framed the measure as a necessary step to enforce legal compliance and motivate personnel to maintain lawful conduct outside their military duties.

The announcement reflects mounting pressure on Russian authorities to address the behaviour of returning combatants. Domestic violence cases among former soldiers have emerged as a significant social problem, prompting officials to implement stricter accountability mechanisms within the military's incentive structure.
