Sabah's BN coalition members have joined opposition figures and civil society in calling for an apology from an Umno politician over remarks made regarding Catholic traditions, amid growing public backlash over the controversial statement.
The demand represents a rare show of unity across the political divide, signalling the sensitivity surrounding religious matters in Malaysia's multi-faith society. Sources close to Sabah BN leadership indicated the party views the comments as inappropriate and damaging to interfaith harmony in the state.
In a separate development, a prominent non-governmental organisation has pressed the Royal Malaysian Police to provide a public explanation regarding the freezing of organisational funds and travel bans imposed on several individuals associated with the group. The NGO contends that authorities have provided insufficient justification for the restrictions, which it characterises as obstructing legitimate civil society activities.
The organisation has called for transparency in law enforcement decision-making and has indicated it may pursue legal remedies if the restrictions are not lifted or properly explained. Police have not yet responded to the NGO's formal request for clarification.
