A resident of Manggatal in Kota Kinabalu was rushed to hospital with critical injuries following an explosion in his kitchen on Wednesday. The Sabah Police Department said the man was believed to have been assembling a homemade fish bomb when the device detonated, causing severe trauma.

Police officers responded to reports of the explosion and found the injured man at the scene. He was immediately transferred to a medical facility for emergency treatment. The extent of his injuries has not been fully disclosed, though authorities confirmed his condition was serious.

Fish bombs—improvised explosive devices traditionally used for illegal fishing in Southeast Asia—have been the source of numerous accidents across the region. Their crude construction and unstable composition make them inherently dangerous to handle.

The Sabah Police Department is investigating the incident to determine the exact circumstances of the explosion and whether any criminal charges will be laid. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the device was intended for personal use or commercial purposes.
