KOTA KINABALU — Political figures from Sabah and Sarawak have moved to reinforce the East Malaysian states' steadfast allegiance to the Malaysian federation, following controversy surrounding an upside-down national flag displayed during an overseas event.
Mustapha Sakmud, a prominent Sabah leader, emphasised that residents of both states remain resolute in their dedication to preserving Malaysia's sovereignty and territorial cohesion. The statement comes amid heightened public attention to symbols of national identity and unity.
The reaffirmation underscores the continued solidarity between Peninsular and East Malaysia, particularly as both Sabah and Sarawak mark their pivotal roles in the nation's formation. Officials stressed that such incidents would not undermine the commitment of East Malaysians to the broader Malaysian project.
The remarks reflect broader efforts by regional leaders to address concerns about national symbolism and reinforce messaging around federal unity. Both states have historically maintained central roles in Malaysia's political and administrative framework since joining the federation.
