Sabah to weave state identity into primary and secondary school curricula

KOTA KINABALU — Sabah's education department will introduce curriculum components highlighting the state's distinctive identity, culture, and history to Year One and Form One students beginning in 2024.

The initiative seeks to instil a deeper sense of local pride and awareness among younger learners while maintaining alignment with Malaysia's national education framework. Education officials said the integrated approach will incorporate Sabah-specific content across various subjects without disrupting existing pedagogical standards.

The curriculum enhancements are expected to cover elements of Sabah's indigenous heritage, local governance structures, economic contributions, and geographical significance within the broader context of Malaysian nationhood. State education authorities have indicated that teaching materials will be developed collaboratively with cultural experts and historians to ensure accuracy and age-appropriateness.
