The disciplinary action marks a significant institutional response to ragging practices at the university. The expelled students were implicated in the ragging of Charith Dilshan, whose suicide prompted the formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The investigation by the University Council documented serious violations of university regulations and anti-ragging policies. The findings led to the decision to permanently revoke the studentship of the 11 individuals from the Faculty of Technology, effectively expelling them from the institution.
Ragging continues to be a persistent disciplinary challenge on university campuses across Sri Lanka. The case at Sabaragamuwa University highlights growing institutional concern over the practice and the severe consequences that can result from unchecked student harassment.
The university's swift action reflects increased pressure on higher education institutions to enforce strict anti-ragging measures and protect student welfare. The expulsion represents one of the more severe penalties imposed in recent cases involving ragging-related incidents at Sri Lankan universities.
