SAD pledges industrial power cost relief through solar initiative

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced plans to create a 'Build Punjab' department aimed at boosting the state's industrial sector and addressing long-standing power cost concerns. The initiative, detailed by party leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, seeks to provide relief to industrial consumers who have struggled with high electricity tariffs affecting manufacturing competitiveness.

Under the proposed scheme, industrial units would be permitted to establish their own solar power generation facilities, potentially reducing their electricity procurement costs to as low as ₹1.50 per unit. This move aligns with India's broader renewable energy objectives while offering direct cost savings to manufacturers operating in the state.

The SAD's initiative reflects growing pressure on Punjab's government to address the industrial sector's challenges, particularly regarding power costs that remain among the highest in the region. By enabling captive solar power generation, the party argues that industries can achieve greater operational efficiency and improved competitiveness in national and international markets.

The proposed department would reportedly oversee regulatory approvals and infrastructure support required for private solar installations, streamlining processes for industrial applicants. SAD leaders have positioned the initiative as part of a comprehensive economic revival strategy for Punjab, targeting both cost reduction and sustainable industrial growth.
