Safety inspections of sleeper and modified buses operating between Delhi, Jaipur and Lucknow have uncovered serious lapses in emergency preparedness and vehicle maintenance standards. The investigation identified jammed emergency exits on a Delhi-Jammu-Katra service, with another bus operated by a major carrier found to have its emergency exit locked at the Kashmiri Gate terminal.

Modifications to vehicle configurations have further compromised safety compliance. A bus at Anand Vihar terminal had been reconfigured from a standard 2x1 to a 2x2 seating arrangement without apparent regulatory oversight. In Jaipur, inspectors found fire extinguishers missing from several vehicles, while emergency exits had been converted into storage spaces—rendering them inaccessible in case of incident.

The pattern of violations extends to Lucknow, where multiple buses were found with locked or obstructed emergency exits. These findings raise serious questions about enforcement of safety regulations governing inter-state passenger transport, which falls under state transport authority jurisdiction across India.

The breaches encompass multiple critical safety systems: emergency egress routes, fire suppression equipment, and basic maintenance protocols.
