Sagaing armed group dissolves, hands weapons to NUG after leader killed

The Sadaung Moe Kyoe PDF, an armed resistance organisation active in Sagaing Region, has dissolved and transferred its weapons to the National Unity Government, marking a significant shift in the fractionalised opposition movement against the Myanmar military junta.

The group, which had maintained operations outside the NUG's formal command structure, made the decision to disband following the killing of its leader. Officials from the organisation cited deteriorating safety conditions as a primary factor in their choice to cease independent operations and integrate their remaining resources with the broader NUG framework.

The Sadaung Moe Kyoe PDF had been among several armed groups that emerged in Sagaing Region following the military coup in February 2021. The surrender of weapons and subsequent dissolution represent a consolidation within the resistance movement, though numerous armed organisations continue to operate across Myanmar with varying degrees of coordination with the NUG.

The NUG, which functions as a shadow civilian government opposing military rule, has sought to unify disparate resistance forces under a coordinated command structure. The Sadaung Moe Kyoe PDF's decision to join this framework may signal growing momentum toward consolidation, though significant challenges remain in coordinating the country's fragmented armed resistance.
