Sagar Defence Engineering licensed to build naval vessels for Indian military
The defence start-up becomes one of a select group of private companies approved to manufacture surface and underwater vessels for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. Sagar Defence Engineering Ltd has received government authorisation to manufacture military vessels, according to sources familiar with the development on Thursday. The vertically integrated deep-tech company is among a limited number of private sector entities granted such approval for naval defence platforms.
The industrial licence permits the company to design, manufacture, construct, integrate, assemble, test and supply specified naval defence platforms and associated systems, subject to applicable regulatory approvals and licence conditions. The authorisation covers both surface and underwater vessels intended for operational use by India's maritime security forces.
This latest approval builds on Sagar Defence Engineering's earlier industrial licence granted this year for the production of specified arms, explosives and ammunition. The company's dual approvals position it as a significant player in India's expanding private defence manufacturing sector.
The government has been progressively opening India's defence production to private players as part of broader efforts to strengthen domestic capability and reduce reliance on imports. The licences granted to Sagar Defence Engineering reflect this policy direction and the company's demonstrated technical capabilities in deep-technology defence applications.
