Sagarmala Finance scraps ₹600 crore blue bond offering amid pricing concerns
The maritime-focused lender has withdrawn its 10-year blue bond issuance after market response fell short of expectations and coupon rates exceeded its pricing targets.

Sagarmala Finance has decided to withdraw its ₹600 crore blue bond issue following weak investor demand and unexpectedly high borrowing costs. The lender received bids totalling just ₹525 crore, with coupon rates ranging between 7.69 per cent and 8.44 per cent, overshooting the company's objective to price the 10-year securities below 8 per cent.
The decision reflects challenging market conditions for maritime and shipping-sector debt. Blue bonds, which finance sustainable blue economy projects including ports and marine conservation, have gained prominence in India's sustainable finance landscape. However, investor appetite for such instruments remains sensitive to broader interest rate movements and sector-specific risks.
For Sagarmala Finance, the withdrawn offering represents a setback in its capital-raising plans. The financing arm of the government's ambitious Sagarmala port development initiative will need to explore alternative funding mechanisms or restructure its bond terms to align with prevailing market rates.
The higher-than-expected coupon demands signal investor caution regarding maritime lending, even as India pushes forward with infrastructure development along its coastlines. Market analysts expect conditions may improve if the central bank's monetary stance softens in coming months, potentially allowing the lender to revisit bond markets at more favourable terms.
