SAI Preps Indian Athletes for Container Accommodations at Asian Games

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has established an unconventional training regimen at its facilities in Patiala and Bengaluru, deploying shipping containers as makeshift residential units to familiarize athletes with their upcoming accommodation at the Asian Games.

With the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Games set to begin on September 19, organizers have opted against constructing a conventional athletes' village. Instead, Indian athletes will be housed in converted shipping containers during the competition. SAI has responded by creating mock container rooms at its national training centers, allowing competitors to experience the confined living quarters firsthand.

The containers measure slightly over six feet in length with minimal wall spacing and room only for essential items. Indian athletes are rotating through overnight stays in the simulated environment, maintaining their regular training schedules the following day. The initiative aims to transform an unfamiliar and potentially unsettling accommodation scenario into a known factor by the time athletes arrive in Japan.

SAI officials have emphasized that the primary objective is psychological preparation—ensuring that unconventional living arrangements do not become a distraction during competition. By normalizing the confined space well in advance, athletes are expected to adapt more readily to their actual quarters in Japan, allowing them to focus entirely on their sporting performances rather than their surroundings.

The approach reflects a pragmatic strategy to manage logistical challenges posed by the host nation's decision to eliminate a centralized athletes' village, converting a potential disadvantage into a structured acclimatization opportunity for India's contingent.
