Salmonella outbreak from contaminated pumpkin seeds infects 81 in France

Health and agriculture authorities in France have confirmed that contaminated pumpkin seeds are responsible for a salmonella outbreak affecting 81 people nationwide. The investigation, conducted jointly by French health and agricultural ministries, determined the source of the bacterial contamination linked to the infected cases. Among those affected, six individuals were hospitalised for treatment, while two additional patients required emergency services intervention. Salmonella, a bacterium commonly found in food products, can cause serious gastrointestinal illness characterised by diarrhoea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The outbreak highlights ongoing food safety concerns within Europe's supply chains, particularly for ready-to-eat products such as seeds and nuts that may receive minimal processing before consumption. Authorities have not yet publicly detailed the specific brand or distributor responsible for the contaminated batch, though investigations into the supply chain are continuing.
