Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by the Enforcement Directorate, marking an escalation in an ongoing investigation into alleged land acquisition violations in Uttar Pradesh.
The ED's investigation is based on 26 first information reports filed against Khan, alleging that agricultural land belonging to farmers in Singankhera village near Rampur was forcibly occupied for the establishment of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. Khan serves as chancellor of the institution, which has been at the center of the controversy.
The case involves allegations of systematic land acquisition through coercive means, with farmers reportedly losing possession of their properties without proper compensation or legal procedure. The ED's involvement signals that authorities are examining the financial aspects and potential money laundering dimensions of the alleged land acquisition.
Khan, a prominent figure in Samajwadi Party politics and a three-time member of parliament, has previously faced multiple legal proceedings. The latest custody order comes as investigative agencies continue to scrutinize the activities and finances connected to the university project.
