Samajwadi Party Sets Conditions for Congress Seat-Sharing Ahead of 2027 UP Elections

Political negotiations between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Indian National Congress have intensified in Uttar Pradesh, with SP leader Akhilesh Yadav laying down explicit conditions for seat-sharing arrangements ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections.

Akhilesh Yadav has made clear that vague demands and general requests will not suffice in determining seat allocations between the two parties. Instead, he has insisted that Congress must present concrete names of candidates it intends to field, along with credible evidence of their electoral viability, before the SP agrees to cede seats.

The demand represents a significant hardening of the SP's negotiating stance, moving beyond traditional seat-sharing preliminaries. By insisting on specific candidate names and proven winning potential, Yadav has signalled that the SP will not simply hand over seats based on Congress claims or historical vote-sharing arrangements.

The move reflects growing tactical assertiveness by the SP, which emerged as the largest opposition force in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 general elections. As the two opposition parties attempt to coordinate against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state's crucial 2027 assembly polls, questions of seat allocation and candidate selection have become points of considerable friction.

Neither the SP nor the Congress has indicated an imminent breakthrough in negotiations, with both parties appearing to adopt hardline positions as they prepare for what is expected to be a closely contested electoral battle in India's most populous state.
