Samajwadi Party to field only two candidates in Rajya Sabha polls

The Samajwadi Party has opted not to field a third candidate in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election, party sources confirmed on Tuesday. The decision underscores the organisation's focus on the state Assembly polls, which remain the primary electoral battleground for the regional party.

Party president Akhilesh Yadav indicated that the SP would instead channel its energy and resources toward securing a comprehensive presence in the Assembly elections. The party has announced plans to contest all available Assembly seats, marking an aggressive electoral strategy ahead of the state polls.

The Rajya Sabha decision allows the party to redirect its organisational machinery and financial resources to grassroots campaigning in Assembly constituencies. By limiting its Upper House candidates to two, the SP has signalled its conviction that victory in the Assembly elections would be the most consequential outcome for the party's political fortunes in the state.

The move also reflects pragmatic electoral calculations, as securing a strong Assembly mandate would provide the party with greater influence in subsequent Rajya Sabha selections. Political observers noted that the strategy represents a calculated prioritisation of immediate electoral objectives over short-term Upper House representation.
