Samar fisherman releases accidentally netted green sea turtles

A fishing operation in Samar turned into a marine conservation success story on Monday when a local fisherman discovered two green sea turtles trapped in his net and immediately reported the catch to authorities.

Rendel Amarilla of Rawis-Anibong was conducting routine fishing operations near Barangay waters at approximately 4:20 p.m. on August 31 when his net unexpectedly captured the protected reptiles. Rather than attempting to extract commercial value from the accidental catch, Amarilla promptly alerted local environmental and fisheries officials.

The swift action by the fisherman and subsequent intervention by authorities ensured the turtles sustained no harm during the incident. Both marine animals were safely released back into the ocean, allowing them to resume their natural habitat.

The incident reflects growing awareness among Philippine fishing communities regarding marine wildlife protection. Green sea turtles remain a protected species under Philippine law, with unauthorized capture or harm subject to legal penalties. The cooperation between local fishermen and government agencies underscores collaborative efforts to preserve the country's marine biodiversity.
