Samsung posts record profits on strong memory chip demand

Samsung Electronics has achieved a new profit milestone with operating profit reaching approximately US$80.1 billion in the three months ended September, representing more than an eightfold increase compared to the same period last year.

The dramatic turnaround reflects a sharp recovery in the semiconductor market, particularly in memory chip pricing and demand. The surge has been underpinned by global expansion of artificial intelligence technologies, which require substantial quantities of high-performance memory components for training and deployment of AI systems.

Memory chip manufacturers including Samsung have benefited from a structural shift in computing architectures driven by the proliferation of AI applications across enterprise and consumer segments. This has reversed a prolonged industry downturn that had pressured profitability across the sector in preceding years.

The results underscore Samsung's position as a leading supplier of critical semiconductor components at a pivotal moment for technology infrastructure investment. The company's performance reflects broader industry dynamics as major technology firms and data centre operators accelerate capital expenditure on AI-related hardware and infrastructure.
